For the 2013 US Open I worked together with a team at Brookyln based HUSH to turn a live stream of data into a fun and interactive experience. The application encouraged play while at the same time helping users sift through the minutia of an entire tournamant worth of data.
The challenge in doing so was that we had to engage many different levels or tennis fan, from kids who had been dragged along, to the tennis elite. The solution was to make a fun playground full of tennis balls, each representing a real match, that users could grab and toss around. We gave them all real 3D physics so many people even invented their own games involving the balls, while for a more hardcore user it was easy to grab a single ball and crack it open to dive into the interactive infographics inside.
